THE LORE
A composition favored by the Helmsmen's Collective of Baldur's Gate, black and azure emerged from necessity. Navy fabric requires deep indigo (expensive), but a master dyer learned to layer blacks with a azure underdye that catches light on moving cloth, creating an illusion of depth at a fraction of the cost. Ship captains and harbor guards wear it for both economy and the way it carries authority.
THE PALETTE
A striking contrast in the dark spectrum. Primary cloth remains nearly black, deep and steadfast. Secondary cloth shows cool azure undertones that gather light subtly, especially on moving fabric. Metal accents vary sharply, some pieces emerging pale silver and bright, others warming to burnished bronze tones. On leather the black dominates decisively with only whispers of blue. The overall effect reads as professional, disciplined, and practical, suited to those who must convey authority without ostentation.
THE CHRONICLE
C
Captain Voss stood on the dock before dawn, watching his crew mend the rigging after a rough crossing from Icewind Dale. Half his crew wore the dark blue-black favored by the Helmsmen's Collective; it was practical, affordable enough to replace when the brine and sun did their work, and it commanded a certain respect in ports from Waterdeep to Candlekeep. A young apprentice, barely sixteen, had just been fitted with his first proper coat in the colors. He stood straighter in it, shoulders back, chin up. Voss remembered wearing his own for the first time, the pride of belonging to something larger than himself. The azure undertones seemed to gather the harbor's weak light and give it back dignified, honest, without pretense. A merchant prince from Amn arrived that morning, his retinue dressed in silks that cost more than Voss's entire trading vessel. Yet when a dispute arose over docking fees and jurisdiction, it was Voss's crew in their black-and-azure that the harbor authority deferred to. The colors meant something; they meant loyalty to the Coast, not to distant coins. The young apprentice watched the Amnian's expression shift from contempt to calculation, and for the first time, he understood that the dye wasn't just practicality. It was a kind of power that didn't need gold to be felt...
