THE LORE
An expensive and refined dye found among the workshops of Waterdeep's Upper Ward, brown alabaster combines warm earth tones with the pale cream of crushed alabaster stone. It requires a master's hand to extract the subtle secondary tones without letting the brown overwhelm the delicate cream. Typically commissioned by scholars, merchants of standing, and minor nobility seeking understated elegance.
THE PALETTE
A warm and sophisticated palette dwelling in the light-to-medium range. Cloth primary is soft tan, gentle and understated. Secondary cloth shifts to deeper warm brown, grounded and mature. Tertiary becomes nearly chocolate, rich and considered. Leather is warm dark brown, reliable and honest. Metal primary shines dark charcoal, modest and stable. Secondary metal brightens to shine silver, providing quiet contrast. The effect on fine cloth speaks of expense and settled comfort without display. On leather it reads honest and workmanlike, trustworthy. On metal it appears distinguished and refined, confident enough to need no embellishment.
THE CHRONICLE
T
The scholar's apprentice carried the new commission into the dyer's workshop, a letter sealed with the sigil of a prominent Waterdeep merchant house. Brown alabaster, they'd requested, and the note specified that the cloth was destined for winter robes befitting a man of learning and discretion. The master dyer examined the order with obvious pleasure; this was the kind of commission that separated true craftspeople from the dyers who merely followed formula. Brown alabaster required understanding the light itself, the way certain creams could suggest both wealth and humility simultaneously. Months later, a scholar moved through the archives of the Blackstaff Tower, his new robes settling with quiet authority around him. He'd been appointed to a position cataloging the tower's oldest texts, a role that suggested trust despite his youth and modest background. A senior mage passed him in a corridor and paused, noting the quality of his dress without noting its cost, which was precisely the point. The robes announced that their wearer understood the distinction between finery and function, between display and dignity. That same season, three other young scholars were appointed to positions in the tower's hierarchy. All wore brown alabaster. The dye became something of a quiet signature for those climbing Waterdeep's intellectual ladders, a visible badge that signaled not ambition but steady competence. The dyer's shop grew famous for the work, though he never advertised. Word of mouth, passed between scholars and their patrons, was endorsement enough...
